Core Research Paradigm

Our center's research paradigm focuses on advancing foundation models and generative AI by addressing five key dimensions: Understandability, Scalability, Responsibility, Accessibility, and Actionability. We aim to develop new mathematical and scientific theories that make these models more understandable, while also exploring the scaling laws and limits to enhance their scalability. Our research emphasizes the responsible development of AI, ensuring models are safe, secure, privacy-preserving, and sustainable. We are committed to making foundation models accessible across different modalities, devices, and domains, and to making them actionable by developing innovative applications that can be deployed in real-world scenarios. This comprehensive approach ensures that foundation models are not only cutting-edge but also practical, ethical, and widely beneficial.

Research Coordination Network

CFMG also serves as an operational unit for the Midwest Research Coordination Network (RCN) for Foundation Models and Generative AI. This RCN connects AI researchers from more than 20 Midwest universities, building a collaborative network that advances innovation in foundation models and generative AI. By facilitating interdisciplinary research and promoting the integration of technology with societal needs, the RCN creates an environment where academic communities can collaborate, share knowledge, and push the frontiers of AI.
